NeilT
Was away camping last weekend with the kids, and around midnight we heard noises and our pet dog took an interest in something crawling in the grass. I have not seen one before, but it was best descibed as a huge beetle, though tan in colour, almost 2 inches long, with a hard, but split shell on its back, that also had wings!! A very creepy bug, but does anyone have an idea what it was?
SandraSJC
Hi Neil, I think you'll find this is a May Beetle! We've had experience ourselves with these in numbers (near the water on the Norfolk Broads).
coloursphotographic
yes i would tend to agree the latin name being " Phyllophaga (genus) " part of the chafer family of beetles they tend to feed below ground for a few years before coming to the surface , also known as may and june beetles, they are attracted to bright lights during the night time.
