2301 zoom lens help

Ok so i know this is going to be a ridiculous question!!

But how on earth do i get the zoom lens out of this machine around everything else that is in the way, like the welded bit of steel that holds the neg carrier.....

I cant get it to the very end of the left side due to the buffer bit on the track stopping it, and i can't seem to angle it in any direction to get it out....

Please help,  I have a new zoom lens to replace this one with..

2301 thats rolling back the years.....

Not sure what your problem is as the lens is mounted on the lens deck that slides from side to side.

Remove the top cover that has the window to look at the neg position. Once thats gone you will find the zoom lens. Its held onto the deck by 3x 3mm set screws, 2 on the right 1 on the left. Do not adjust or mess with the knurled brass thumb screws with the same screws in the centre.These are used to adjust lens axis. This is a pain to get correct and entails a focus neg and a centre cross. The idea is that as you zoom from min to max the cross stays in the same position on the paper. if it moves your image will move on the paper and make it impossible to have the same coverage at different zoom values.

The correct way is to check light axis as above, then coverage (lens position) focus, then lens balance, You can remove a blanking plate or the 120 Zoom lens if fitted to see the projected image on the base board, dark bag over the head, style. As I said all good fun and in my opinion worth paying someone to do it right, its about 3 or 4 hours work and not easy.

heya magenta,  cheers for the info...  i've been without a printer for a while now, mainly just been printing on wide format printers, so going back to the 2301 will definatley bring back some memories... haha  well i'm hoping!!

The lens is just the 135 zoom lens, just putting a working one in...

I've taken off the top covers and i've gotten the 3 screws out ok,  but i just cant seem to angle the lens to actually come out, it wont fit coming thru the where the carrier goes, and it wont move far enough to the left side to just pull out, i know it has to be something simple, but the more i look at it, the more confused i get, because it should be easier!

Been a long time but I can not remember any reason why the lens deck will not move to the left enough to remove the lens, My only suggestion is to disconnect the worm drive or hold the lens and motor the deck back to the right, don't be tempted to remove the neg mask framework as it will screw up to much alignment of neg and exposure deck etc.

Cheers Magenta    the worm bit ended up moving back for me after a bit of elbow work   

now to remember how to set up the channels and get it all focussed ...  will be a loooonnngg night i think!!

Put a bit of clear film base in the manual neg mask and scratch the corners with a pin, draw a cross in the centre  and use this to centre your image on the base board. Zoom from 0 to 100 and check that the projected cross stays in the same place. if it does then go for focus, a hand enlarger grain magnifier is the best tool as you can see the grain pop sharp, then position the lens for coverage, all of this is done with the aperture wide open
