Replacement CD Rom Drive

Well, after the original Plextor drive started playing up on our 3001, we had the choice of replacing the CD burner with an original unit, with the usual high installation fees under our contract, or try another unit and see if it worked.

Good News!

Replaced the Plextor with a CDR/DVD-Rom drive (Lite on model), and it reads and burns CD fine. It also gives us the benefit of now being able to read directly from DVD's which we are starting to see more of.

So I guess if anyone is looking at the change, give it a go, and it should work ok.

I did not push the envelope and try to install a DVD burner - did'nt have time, and we don't do much of negs/scans to dvd anyway :D

True......But I think you can not Recover the machine using recovery CD without Plextor CD-ROM. Did you try to recover without Pextor CD-ROM?

Some drives work fine with the recovery CD some don

True...I had tried with SONY, LG, LiteON. No one is worked for recovery though I did not use any USB device even like mouse or keyboard. Recovery is only done with Plextor CD-ROM. It is perhaps they write CD with Plextor writer only. What you Think?

I think this issue is only on a QSS-3001, on the early motherboard Bios there seems to be issues with CD drive support.

I recently did a recovery on a 3001 with a Sony NEC Optiarc DVD writer (Model AD-5200A) without any problems.

Can't really undertstand the problems with CD drives. You running W2K with SP-4?

I had experience with a QSS-3001 where a LiteOn was OEM which subsequently failed early in the days. Replaced it with a Sony  for convenience from the closest electronics retailer, crossed my fingers and worked "straight out of the box". Have done 3 recoveries since, on the same drive.....one HD failure and two for viruses. Also installed a 2nd combo CD/DVD +-RW (Imation brand) drive in the spare bay. Only issue is, you may have to dive into the BIOS on start-up to change the boot sequence for a recovery. Check your settings.

If you re-start the PC only, you should be able to see if the PC detects the "alien" drive when it scans all devices as it initialises. You may have do a full shut down and power up if the PC hangs up after doing this!

Yeah Only SONY is working other than Plextor.
