Fiber cable in an MLVA head

What is the proper way to clean the end of the fiber optic cable at the filter wheel?

Remove it from the bottom of the filter wheel and clean it with a

I had a crust of brown stuff that had to be scraped off? It did make a mess of uniformity but is made Dmax black come back real nice. The filer wheel was virtualy brand new so I didn't bother with it. Was the hitecloth the rag that came with a HRCRT? My MP came with a blue polyester like cloth. ?????
