Not quite sure what you mean by bypassing the heater? :-/

You can unplug it if you want, but how is it going to keep the chemistry at the right temperature? ;D

What I would suggest is to switch the machine off at the wall, and check all of the wiring around the pump area is clean and dry, especially the connector for the thermo sensor. As you mentioned you had a spillage.

Also check that the sparge pipe inside the CD tank is not blocked, as this will cause poor circulation of the chemistry, and make the sub tank hot, while the main tank will be relatively cold.
