lifetime guarentees on CD

we're using regular cd-r for writing customers photos to. we have a limited life warning sticker on them - advising the customer to replace in 3 years.

so perhaps we can grab some high ground if we move up to the fuji picture-disc & it's lifetime guarentee (32p). it's all about grabbing as much film processing as possible....

any experiences out there?

I know Kodak may not be the current flavour of the month, but they do have an archival CD that is warranted for 300 years. It is just coming onto the market, and its packaging actually says "300 years"!

Now if thats not an oportunity to upsell customers, I don't know what is!

The name of the disc is "Kodak Preservation Disc" and I have seen them with my own eyes. Now, getting them is a little more of a challenge!!!!!

Yes  they have stayed around that long but this industry is moving very fast and the hi-tec companies need to be producing new products to stimulate demand.

DVD's minin DVD's whats next. far more important that we worry less about the life-span of a CD that our grandkids will never be able to play and concentrate on the customers having prints that can be viewed and copied 100 years from now

No your missing the point concentrate on the Prints now, most customers dont give a ... as to the life span of a CD and definetly dont want to pay much more than a Fiver for one and i find that i both my sites and they are totaly different customer based shops.

Those that come inasking for CD's normally just want that we sell them the Print concept.

A 300 year warranty on CDR's seems like overkill, I can't imagine that there will be CD readers in 300 years!

But OTOH if it helps to sell the concept of a premium quality product, then I can see the point.

A paper that would be guaranteed to last 300 years would be even better though, there are all sorts of claims about how long various papers are going to last, but very few guarantee anything.

the point is....

we write photos to CD.

if they are going to rot in 3-5 years we need to explain this at the POS. as it's a great opportunity for litigation!

if this enables us to upsell then great - though i prefer the idea of justifying a single premium price & bragging about the benefits.

so what's the best media for the job?

fuji's "lifetime guarentee" at 32p looks good to me.
