Speeding Up A G4 Kiosk

Hi,

My first post.. so please bear with me being a newbie!

We inherited a G4 Kiosk in our graphics business from a neighbouring shop about 24 months ago.  In that time it has done a fair amount of work with the only problem being the shredding of the ribbon rewind motor gear which I have since replaced.. a fairly common fault I believe.  I have always built our PCs myself and recently upgraded the RAM of the G4 to 4gB in the hope it would give a speed boost, but the result has been marginal if anything at all.

 

My question is: Does anyone have any suggestions on how to speed up the G4?   The current configuration at the moment is very old.. Windows NT4 with KPK 4.1.2,   Idealy I would like to upgrade to version 6 (mainly for wireless connectivity) but I suspect from my research that NT would have to be upgraded to Windows XP SP3 first, the upgrades then applied consecutively. 

On this slow machine the whole process sound too laborious, hence my question about improving the speed of the machine.

 

As an aside, has anyone replaced the hard disk with a Compact Flash / CF to IDE adapter combination?  It would be nowhere near as fast as an SSD with Trim capability but I don't think SSD option would be compatible with the M/B architecture or older Operating System speed expectations.

I upgraded the G4's (pentium 4) to G4x's by ordering newer core2duo mainboards (they are getting hard to find) 

 

u can find the g4 windows xp downloads somewhere in the forums,

 

then the upgrade disks all teh way up to 7.1? will upgradfe the service packs

 

i run 2gb of ram,coreduo e6700 - 2.4ghz

 

havent upgraded the hard disks to SSD's. orders come through almost instantly,but its still slow...

 

so my advice is find the lenovo ibm (computer equivalent in that sff size) mobtherboard,and just do it up.

 

Unfortuantely they changed their formfactor and u cant get higher than core2duo in that sff lenovo machine (that sits underneath the kiosk itself)

Congratulations!!

I have 2 G4X, one of them updated to KPK 8.1 and it got slow, with the "Please Wait" too often on screen.

Do you know what form factor is the motherboard or what model of Lenovo it is?

hi auslagger, i have a g4 with 1.2 ghz pentium 4 and kpk 8.1 (windows xp)

I replaced the hdd with a CF on an ide adaptor, but it's still too slow

If i just switch the mainboard, it will just work, without reinstalling anything?

Or I need to install the windows 7 based kpk from the g4x?
