SP500 scanner with USB connection issues

Since few weeks ago I’m facing a critical issue with my SP500 scanner. When trying to connect into the scanner: “W-SP-4104 Turn on the power of the film scanner or connect the USB cable.” I’m using a DICII + S2, without any software update recently.

Observations:

Until this critical USB issue happened, this scanner always showed a strange behavior: To establish the connection with the scanner I always had to plug out/in the USB cable with the scanner on. Only occasionally (say 1 out of 50 times…) the S2 software was able to establish the connection for the first time.

Since few days ago this workaround solution doesn't work. The scanner is always disconnected from the host (computer), even turning off/on the scanner with the S2 software on. The SP500 is not showing up in the Windows device manager whatever the circumstances, and using also a different computer and USB cable.

I did some checkups to the voltages in the CTL25 board and I didn't find anything abnormal. 12V, 5V, 3.3V and 1.8V, all are there and stable. Visually capacitors are also ok.

Any issue related with the CTL25 board? Can this be repaired?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, I tried different ports, different USB cables, and also different computers. The scanner never shows up in Windows device manager. When I turn on the scanner with the computer turned on, the Windows device manager refreshes (i.e. there is an USB device interrupt to the host), but then the scanner does not appear.

Yes, I have checked the voltages with an oscilloscope, and they are stable over the time. Attached is a screenshot of how they behave during scanner boot up.

  • Yellow: 12V (CTL7 connector)
  • Purple: 5V (CTL7 connector)
  • Blue: 3.3V (after the DC-DC converter located within the board)

The first two attachments correspond to the same crop (the second one is just a zoom in of the first). Only the 3.3V behaves a little strange during scanner boot up, but the instability is only 2ms... I believe that's not enough to cause the issue? This behavior is always replicable on every boot up.

I also attach an image of the CTL25 board turned on, could any LED indicate something abnormal? Thank you.

Voltages are correct. CTL25 has additional power supply ( 24V on CTL3 ) , but it shouldn't effect USB connection ( on connector CTL10 ) .

If your CTL25 board has all power suppliers, USB connector CTL10 has good connection to computer port, but you do not see scanner on device manager then CTL25 board is faulty ( Fuji part number 113Y100001 ) .

Run some USB port scanning software. Might be you see board as unknown item, or identified as some other equipment. SP500 USB ID VID_04CB&PID_6121 . Driver version 2.0.0.1 should fit to any Windows ( 32, or 64 bit ) .

I scanned the USB ports with a software and I got Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed). And this is only detected during scanner boot up. If I turn on the scanner first and then connect the USB cable, the USB connection is not detected at all. This indicates that the USB transceiver of the scanner is being left in a kind of sleep mode (or in protection mode) after some time once the scanner is turned on.

Is there anyone who can repair this type of board? Or where to find a CTL25 board?

Alternatively, I notice that on top of the CTL25 board there is a PCI Express connection that seems to allow for bypassing the USB transceiver (maybe for engineering debugging purposes). Has anyone tried using this scanner through this PCI Express connection?

Thank you.

Here is not PCI Express connector. Here is connector for old type PCI card. Only Fuji engineers know why they added this port and what can be connected.

To this PCI slot can connect only exact PCI card. Board internal software should support it ( have driver ) . Might be there can be connect Ratoc PCI-FW4 firewire card with PCI connector. This model used on other Fuji equipment ( inside scanners, printers, FMPC and computers ) . On SP3000 this board is inside image box, on scanner internal computer and FMPC ( when it is used ) .

If you see Unknown USB Device then board hardware doesn't work properely. Computer see board, but can't get information what is there. I had to repair few boards. It is very complicated, so successfuly repaired only half of them.

CTL25 has Fuji part number 113Y100001 . Didn't see for sell this board on Ebay. Some Chinese company offer it on Alibaba, but can be there is old offer and they really do not have it. 113Y100001 can ask Fuji, but not sure, if they still can supply it. Scanner model is discontinued. Big part sellers from Japan ( for example DADAER LLC ) do not offer to order it.

Thanks for the feedback.

Yes, finding a replacement board can be quite challenging nowadays. If anyone has a CTL25 board even with some hardware issue, please don't hesitate to contact me by PM to negotiate. I have some background in electronics, and with two bad boards maybe I can make one good. It's quite frustrating to stop a scanner like this due to a USB connection issue...

If anyone is also available to repair this board, feel free also to contact me via PM to negociate. Thank you.

Returning to this topic.
I have a chance to trade a new CTL25 board.
The question is what care should be taken with its replacement?

  • Are there calibration parameters on this board?
  • Does the S2 software need to be reconfigured? A new scanner ID?

Thank you.

Scanner parameters are on HD . Scanner ID should be the same, which is now. You do not change scanner ( change only board ) .

To save settings on Fuji menu make backup. If you ever need restore scanner settings and software settings you will have them.

Fuji settings are on HD and on scanner. When they mismatch see message and from menu can transfer correct settings from HD to boards, or from boards to HD.

Backup can make on Fuji menu even if scanner doesn't work. Backup takes settings, which are on HD.

Finnally I got my new CTL25 board!

When I turned on for the first time, it automatically started the scanner configuration (~2min) until it asks to restart the scanner.
Once I restarted the scanner, it is returning "E-SP-4108: Film scanner ID is invalid" + "E-SP-4109: The parameters of CTL circuit board is invalid".

How to proceed now? Setup and Maintenance? Load data from FD in the "Scanner backup&download" menu?

Thank you.

E-SP-4108 - Register ID in menu 0344 .

E-SP-4109 - perform reading in menu 0350 . Reading button - reads the parameters saved in the HD and writes them into the circuit board when the circuit board has been replaced. The parameters saved in the HD are written into the board EEPROM.

Only if data on HD bad then on menu 0326 you can load backup. Settings will be loaded on HD ( not on the board ) .

Ok, thank you.

My problem now is that I don't know the Scanner ID to register. Where can I find this information?

The ID would be on the old board, but I can't connect to it. I remember seeing it once and the ID was 13 or 16, but I'm not sure. Is there any problem if I try to register an incorrect ID? Can I always edit it? Thank you.

Go D:\Fujifilm\Frontier\PARAM\SCAN\ There should see folder Lukexxxxxxx  . Instead of x will be 7 digits.  Here is scanner ID. The same ID is on file names inside this folder ( xxxxxxx_AD_TIMING.BIN and other files) . File xxxxxxx_MSKADJ_AFC_yyyyyyyy.ini has two IDs - scanner ID ( 7 digits ) and film carrier ID ( 8 digits )  . When registered few film carriers you see few files with two IDs.

Also ID is on backup folder, backup files and on scanner.

Might be when you on menu 0350 transfer scanner settings to the board then ID will be transferred also. If not - lt is not difficult to enter ID separately.

Great, thank you very much. Scanner is finally alive!

One thing I notice with this new board, and that happened with the old one as well, is that sometimes when I connect the scanner the message "W-SP-4186 The USB Ver.1.1 is connected between SP500 and Imaging Controller. Connect the USB Ver.2.0 correclty" appears. I tried different USB ports, but without success. Could this be a problem of the DIC-II computer? And that could have damaged the USB transceiver of the other board? Thank you.

W-SP-4186 means the USB Ver.1.1 is connected between SP500 and Imaging controller. Connect the USB Ver.2.0 correctly.

LukeUsbDp.exe detects USB ver.1.1. Might be that PC’s USB is not USB Version 2.0, the hub for USB Version 1.1 is connected, poorly connected connector on computer, scanner USB connector, or connector on CTL25 board.

Use some computer USB testing tool to test port, where connected scanner. Try update drivers ( motherboard chipset, USB hub and port driver ) . Check USB cables and connectors.
