Konica DS-1000 information

Hello all,

I'm a home photographer in the market for a more professional scanner, and have come across an advert for a DS-1000 scanner standalone. I haven't been able to find much information online about its specs and capabilities.

My intended use is to scan 35mm and 120 B&W and colour negatives, and perhaps the occasional transparency. This is with the intention of editing on PC and having selects prints made, mostly up to 12", maybe up to 20".

There are a couple of drum scanners available locally for similar money and I'm trying to decide between the two. I used to work in a lab, so have experience with both minilab equipment and drum scanners.

Any information on the DS-1000 and how it compares to a drum scan for ease/speed of use and resolution, bit depth, and dynamic range would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

DS-1000 is cheap and reliable film scanner made in Japan. Never had to replace light source. Whole scanner made of metal, so it is very heavy ( about 40 kg ) .

When scanned 135F maximum resolution 4988 x 7428. For regular customers enough to scan 16 Base ( 2048 x 3072 ) . Can scan .tiff .bmp, or .jpg . If in short - resolution a little higher, if compare with Noritsu HS-1800.

DS-1000 is firewire scanner. If to use with original computer ( running Windows 2000 ) then scanning very slow. Need change computer ( where W7 32 bit, or W10 32 bit ) . When used new computer scanning speed is faster. Scanning speed on original computer and new computer can see here :

Automatic film  carrier is to scan 135 films. To scan 120 films and other you need universal film carriers and masks for exact film. It is enough 6 x 9 mask. Using it perfectly can scan other frames ( 6 x 4.5 , 6 x 6 and other ) . There are many other masks (to scan mounted slides, 135 films, 240 ( APS ) and other.
Also there is 240 automatic film carrier, but it is useless. 240 ( APS ) very rare.

Konica scanner DS-1000 is the oldest model. Newer are DS-1010, DS-2000, DS-2001 and FS-3000 . DS-2001 working on W10 32 bit can see here :

I have all Konica software. It is for Windows 2000, but I know how to run it on Windows 10 x86, or W7 x86 . To run software need USB dongles. If it lost I have them. If have empty dongle I can program them online.

Thank you very much for the detailed reply.

Do you know what colour bit depth the scanner is capable of, and what the dynamic range (DMAX) is?

I do not have Konica scanner. Just repair and return to customers. Scanning time and resolution I saw when I had it.

I'm looking at buying a DS-1000 locally. The owner says that 35mm works fine, but that 120 has a light green edge.  He thinks it may be a dirty "lcd light", so I'm not sure if he means the light source, or is confused about the sensor.

Would you have any guesses what it might be?  I recently rebuilt an ICG drum scanner, so am quite happy to make repairs.

LCD light has monitor. Didn't hear about scanner, which has LCD. LCD and light can have old printer ( with digital film carrier ) , but not scanner.

DS-1000 has light source ( LED light unit ) . LED unit easy can be removed from scanner and cleaned. Also can be cleaned air filters beside it.

Light source is on the bottom. Light through film goes to CCD, which is at the top. CCD is hidden and protected. There can't access dust. Dust could access glass, which protects CCD, but even it would be difficult. Glass is covered from all sides. Also glass is at the top and dust is falling down. I think top glass will be clean. It can be cleaned. but it will not change anything.

On universal ( manual ) carrier can try insert other mask ( 135, 240, mounted slides ) . Scan with these masks.

There are various masks for 120 film ( 6x4.5 , 6x6, 6x7, 6x8, 6x9 ) . Light green edges have all of them?

It is impossible to say what cause light green edges. Might be need adjust something on software. There are many adjustments there. To say something need connect to scanner software and look.  Might be need register base, update light source power, adjust light source, or something else.
