Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone with experience servicing or calibrating a Fuji Frontier SP3000 can help me with a problem I’m having with 120 film.

My SP3000 scans 135 film successfully and the scans are sharp, but I cannot get any 120 film format to work correctly. Every 120 format I have tried eventually results in the following focus error:

W-4412 – Auto focus failed. Check if the film is set correctly.

The scanner is equipped with the MFC10AY manual film carrier and the appropriate 120 masks/light boxes.

What makes me suspect a calibration/setup issue is that, judging from the usage/working information of the scanner, it appears that this machine was used almost exclusively for 135 film in its previous life. So I am wondering whether the 120 side of the machine was never properly set up or calibrated.

What I know so far

  • 135 film scans correctly and is sharp.

  • The 135-S mask works correctly in the manual carrier.

  • The position value for my 135-S setup is 108.

  • I have tried multiple 120 formats, including 6×4.5 and 6×9.

  • All 120 formats give essentially the same autofocus/focus problem.

  • I have checked the correct light boxes for the different masks.

  • I have looked at the AF/focus adjustment settings for the MFC10AY.

  • The 120 focus adjustment values appear to be at 0.00.

  • I also experimented with a small focus offset of approximately ±0.05, but this did not solve the problem.

  • The error remains W-4412.

I previously also had an issue with the 6×9 mask identification. The scanner sometimes identified it as 6×4.5 or reported “No mask inserted.” I managed to get the mask identification working, but the autofocus problem remained.

I have been looking through the Setup & Maintenance menus, including:

0322 – Working Information Display
0323 – AF Function Setup

My main question is:

Is there a separate initial focus/position calibration that needs to be performed for the MFC10AY/120 setup when a machine has previously only been configured or used for 135?

I’m particularly interested in knowing whether there is a mechanical/reference position, focus position value, lens registration, AF setup or other service adjustment that I should check before trying to compensate using the normal focus offset.

If anyone has a working SP3000 with an MFC10AY and could share their 120 focus/position values or screenshots of the relevant service menus, that would also be extremely helpful. I understand that the exact values may differ between machines, but it would at least give me a reference.

The fact that 135 works perfectly while every 120 format fails in the same way makes me think I am missing a specific 120 calibration step rather than having a general autofocus problem.

Any suggestions on what I should check next would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
